The events of 9/11 affected Mr. Lima deeply, and he wanted to use his art to express...in an abstracted, non-documentary way, his reactions. There is ample precedent for artists' reacting to tragic situations , either directly or obliquely. Gruesome Biblical or mythological subjects reflect the times of Renaissance artists. More immediate responses are Goya's horrific war scenes and Picasso's impassioned Guernica. Mr. Lima's ghostly World Trade Center pieces have both immediate impact and haunting beauty.
